We rented a car but it smelled too much like smoke

We were on a trip a couple of weeks ago to a city in the southern part of the country.

We had to rent a car since we had flown into the airport, which was no big deal. We rent cars all the time and usually we don’t have a problem with them. This car, however, had issues. The heating and cooling system seemed to be on the blink for some reason. And not only that, but every time I tried to turn on the air conditioning to start cooling the car down, the car started to smell bad. My husband said that he thought there might be something stuck in the air vents in the car that was making it smell bad. I don’t know what it was, but I do know that air conditioning should never smell like that! It smelled like there was something rotting inside the air ducts of the car. If I had to explain it, I would say that it smelled like a rotten skunk who was smoking a cigarette. I hate the smell of smoke and skunks, and so running the air conditioning just wasn’t an option. My husband said that if we would just run the A/C for long enough, it would probably push the smell out of the air vents and make the car smell better. I didn’t agree with him, though. Plus, I thought I might die while holding my breath as I waited for the smell of the A/C to fade away. Eventually, my husband gave up and took the car back to the rental agency to trade it. He knew that we were going to have to have working air conditioning that week.
