The new add-on needed more HVAC.

My sister moved her son and his wife into her home, about five years ago.

When the new baby showed up last week, they suddenly realized they needed more space.

My sister said they were discussing purchasing a new home as a family home for all of them. Then they found out how expensive that would be. Instead of purchasing a new home, they decided to put an addition onto the house. They planned to add an apartment to the back of the house. They would share the kitchen, but there would be a living room, master bedroom, bathroom and a bedroom for the baby. When they began making the plans for the addition, they had to call in the HVAC company. The HVAC contractor told them they would need a new HVAC for the house. The ductwork rotted through, and it would be more expensive to repair the ductwork than trying to replace it. My sister had known this day would come. She asked what alternatives they had and the HVAC specialist said they could look into ductless HVAC for the house. He told her how much cheaper it was to run the ductless HVAC and yet it was highly efficient in heating and cooling. The cost of putting on the addition was going to be high, but her son and his wife took out a loan to pay for the work and the new HVAC system. She would not be alone anymore, and they had a home. Ten years after they had all moved in together, she had two more grandchildren, another bedroom, and she had put the house in her son’s name.
