The oldest trick in the book – a bait and switch

Do you know about the age-old bait-and-switch routine used by sales teams? It’s existed for what feels like forever now.

It’s a shady practice if you ask me, since the bait-and-switch technique works to convince others that company A has this great deal on an item.

When a potential customer comes to grab that item, the sales guy tries to sell them something more extravagant and bigger! It’s an upsell to them, but it’s a bait-and-switch to me. The original item was never for sale in the first place more often than not, while other times the process is merely a ploy to get clients through the door. I was an unfortunate customer and receiver of one of these scams the other weekend, as I was trying to purchase a used Gerber router for my home. I’ve been searching for a quality Gerber router for about a week by then, and yet they rarely were coming up for sale. I knew it would take some time to find the perfect item, but when I found a Gerber M-3000 at wholesale price, I was ready to write a check! The used router was available for purchase at their location, and I drove there the same morning. I even called ahead, just to be sure! I did not want to make a one-hour drive for no reason, after all. The clerk assured me that the Gerber M-3000 was still available, and she even sent me more than one picture of the item to my email address. Imagine my surprise and disgust when they said it was not only not available upon my arrival, but that they tried to sell me something more expensive. What nerve!
