One thing you should never ever do is try to fix your own central heating and air conditioning system. A friend of mine tried doing this recently and it ended up costing him almost triple what it would have cost had he just called for HVAC repair to begin with. He ended up totally breaking his central heating and air conditioning system to the point where the local heating and air conditioning company could not repair it. He ended up having to invest in a brand new, up to date and very expensive central heat and a/c unit. That was pretty messed up when the initial issue would have only cost him a few hundred bucks had he not messed with it. Now because he did, he ended up paying thousands for a whole new heating and air conditioning unit. The moral of the story is that if you are not a certified and professional heat and a/c specialist, do not even attempt to try to fix your own HVAC unit. It could end up killing your HVAC system when all that was needed originally was some simple HVAC repair from the local heat and a/c company. After hearing this story from my friend it made me aware to never try this. And if this had not happened to my friend, there is a good chance at some point when my own central heat and air conditioning unit broke down that I would have tried to repair it myself and end up in the same situation!
