Starting the renovations with the HVAC

We didn’t go into this with our eyes closed.

  • Still, renovating a home that is 80 years old is not going to follow a manual.

When we decided that this was the house we wanted to raise our kids in, we knew that decision would come with a lot of time and effort. But as I sit in the quality heating and air 18 months after we started the renovation, I can say that it was totally worth it. Just hard to believe that we finally checked all the boxes and it’s over. We started with the heating and cooling equipment. For this region, that was pretty much essential. It’s not the winter we had to worry about but the summer and no HVAC cooling. That would have stopped us dead in our tracks and made this place unbearable to live in. Plus, this was a big renovation given the fact that this house was originally designed before the advent of residential HVAC. Over the decades, previous owners had put in window air conditioners and there were a few stray space heaters we found in the attic. But we wanted serious HVAC technology as this was going to be our home for at least 20 years if not longer. Instead of ruining the aesthetic by installing ductwork for central air conditioning, we went a different direction. The ductless multi split system was the way we decided to go. Essentially, this is a series of ductless heat pumps which are placed strategically throughout the house. Not only are they wonderfully efficient, but the ductless heat pumps allow us to customize the heating and cooling through the house.
