So the HVAC cabinet is now a crime zone

The thought that I would have ever had to lock my HVAC condenser cabinet down would have seemed absurd to me.

That is until I saw my neighbors HVAC tossed around his yard like so much garbage.

So yea, I am locking a cage over the HVAC cabinet and locking it down to the concrete pad. Come to find out, there are people out there who will rip the copper fittings and tubes from inside the guts of my HVAC. They toss the really valuable parts like a compressor to get their hands on a few dollars worth of copper. This makes me just want to runaway somewhere there aren’t people. I truly hope that I never witness this happening to my HVAC. But, with the HVAC cage and lock, I suppose I won’t have to. It’s just that locking down my HVAC cabinet seems nearly apocryphal. I just can’t quite get to an understanding on why this is something someone would do. I mean if you are willing to commit such a bizarre act in broad daylight, why not take to valuable HVAC stuff? I did some checking and it appears this sort of copper grab from HVAC units is on the rise. Apparently, there are thieves who target only the HVAC units. I just can’t imagine that they are getting any more than pennies on the dollar for the stolen copper. Regardless, I have taken the necessary precautions and at least I don’t have to worry about my HVAC being torn into.
