Adding freon to an HVAC unit is only a temporary solution

A few years ago, I lived in an amazing 2-bedroom condo.

The complex had incredible amenities.

There was a tennis and basketball court, a gym, a game room, two swimming pools, a car washing area, and more. I used the pool a lot and the game room was always fun. My friends used to love coming over, so that we could take advantage of the pool table and video games in the game room. I really enjoyed living in that condo except for one issue. The HVAC unit was old. In fact, it was about 20-years old at the time I lived there. The owner of the condo never replaced the unit when he purchased the place from the previous owners. When I moved in, I didn’t realize there was a problem because the air conditioner worked fine. About 6 weeks after I moved in, I had the first issue with the A/C. It had stopped cooling and I didn’t understand why. When I contacted the landlord, he didn’t hesitate to send an HVAC technician to fix the issue. The technician said that he filled up the unit with freon, so I should be good to go. At the time, I didn’t know that if an A/C unit requires freon, it means that the unit needs to be replaced because it has a leak that can’t be fixed. Well, my landlord did not want to replace the unit because it does cost thousands of dollars for a new HVAC system. So, instead he would refill the freon as needed. But this was only a temporary fix and he eventually had to replace the A/C unit.
